  • The discovery is awarded to researchers from the University Medical Center of Chicago (United States) who have shown that one more hour of sleep a day protects the coronary arteries from calcium deposits, one of the indicators of cardiac complications that multiply the risk by four of having a heart attack.

    The study was conclusive: sleeping one more hour a day reduces the chances of calcification in the coronary arteries by 33% and therefore the risk of heart attack, one of the heart diseases that causes the most deaths in the world.

    Although the explanation is not yet conclusive, researchers point to cortisol, the stress hormone, as the possible person responsible for this mysterious relationship, since during sleep it is one of the few moments in which its amount in the blood decreases.

    In short, sleeping is now, as well as relaxing, a prophylactic method to avoid heart attacks.
