Do you regret not going to bed earlier the night before every morning? Well, we’re sorry to tell you that going to bed late is more dangerous than you think. According to a study carried out in Great Britain, this habit is related to suffering an early death. According to the results, those who tend to go to bed late at night are more likely to die at a younger age.
Why is it so dangerous to go to bed late?
This research, conducted at the University of Surrey, has concluded that those who stay up late are 10% more likely to die earlier. In addition, the probability of suffering different mental and psychological problems throughout their lives is higher.
But why do they have more health problems?
- To reach these conclusions, 433,000 British participants between the ages of 38 and 73 have been analyzed. Each was asked in which category they considered themselves: ‘definitely daytime’, ‘moderately daytime’, ‘moderately nocturnal’ or ‘definitely nocturnal’. Six and a half years later, they reviewed how many of these people had died and the state of health of all of them.
- To make the data more reliable, variables such as age, gender, race, body mass index, socioeconomic status, and some habits such as smoking were taken into account.
- The data showed that those who considered themselves ‘definitely nocturnal’ were 90% more likely to suffer from psychological disorders, and 30% more likely to develop diabetes, gastrointestinal and neurological problems.
- In addition, it was possible to conclude that those who usually go to bed later are more prone to smoking, drinking alcohol and coffee, and abusing illegal drugs.
- Research has not looked at the reasons why they have more health problems. But experts point out that the daytime lifestyle is more common than the nightlife and, therefore, those who go to bed later suffer the consequences of, despite everything, having to live and work during the day.
Other consequences of lack of sleep
- Nobody likes to sleep little, but the consequences of a lack of sleep can affect your health and your mood.
- Going to bed late and having to get up early translates into a dangerous lack of sleep. This increases the risk of mental illness, often behaviorally related.
- Patients who sleep less are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety.
- Those who don’t get a good night’s rest are more likely to have weight problems because being more tired tends to lead more sedentary lives.
- The risk of suffering domestic and car accidents increases, because you are not sufficiently rested. In these circumstances, the ability to react is lost.
- In addition, it is common for lack of sleep to make it more difficult for us to learn and memorize. The attention span also decreases, as well as the ability to make decisions.
Women need more sleep than men
- Did you know that women need more sleep than men? Nothing more and nothing less than 20 more minutes, according to a study by Southborough University (United Kingdom).
- This is because a woman’s brain works in a more complex way than a man’s. Therefore, she needs more time to recover, a task she carries out while we sleep.
- In addition, another study from Duke University in the United States ensures that the lack of rest affects the health of women worse than that of men. This makes them more prone to depression and anxiety.
